After defending our nation’s constitutional rights in combat, it is difficult for some military veterans to appreciate how some U.S. citizens utilize those freedoms.
This gentleman, a decorated soldier of the United States Army who wished not to be named for this question-and-answer session, understands the protests but not the violence. He gets the political debates but not the decisive division. And amid this coronavirus pandemic, he is OK with taking the necessary precautions but fails to understand why some, including the president, have discounted wearing face coverings that are scientifically proven to protect others from our germs.
With an Election Day approaching, he is concerned for the American people, but when the first question was posed (Why are you worried for the people of the United States?), he halted the conversation by saying, “How about I just write you something?”
OK.
What follows is this man’s message to all of us, and our gender, race, age, or social status do not matter, and in his opinion our political inclinations should not either. Throughout his lifetime, he has cast votes with a goal of improving his community,
and his country with little thought concerning party power. Sure, he is a Democrat so, yes, he has chosen a “side,” but at the same time this American veteran believes any elected official can offer a solid solution to what ails the U.S.
What follows is his idea.
We Are All Americans
I had a thought after seeing a shirt displaying: “I would rather be an American than a Democrat.”
I went to war to protect our tradition of independent thinking and freedom of speech.
Being a Democrat, let me say, I find it insulting that you do not thank me for protecting your right to call me Un-American.
Whether you served or not, we are all Americans, YOU and Me. I hope and pray all of us can accept and cherish that.
As Americans, we have equal status and equal vote. We all pledge allegiance to our Flag.
I hope to see shirts displaying, “WE ARE ALL AMERICANS.”
THANK YOU,
