I just don’t get it!
I mean what in the hell is so hard about doing it?
And yet every day I see people who blatantly refuse to do it?
Obviously (I hope) I’m referring to wearing a mask (face covering if you prefer) in public places.
Just the other day my wife and I ventured forth to the St. Clairsville Kroger pharmacy to obtain our flu shots. While we were in line awaiting our turn to sign in, I turned around to survey the scene, and lo and behold there was a woman standing behind my wife; she wasn’t wearing a mask.
AND SHE WAS (EXPLETIVE DELETED) COUGHING!!!
Now what was I supposed to do? Several things ran through my mind, but they all carried prison time with them. Then I considered politely saying, “Where’s your mask, you moron?” But I knew that this approach would upset my wife, and so I took a deep breath, turned around, and asked the girl who was signing us up for the shots whether she would refuse service to unmasked customers. After all, there is a sign at the entrance asking patrons to wear them. In answer to my inquiry, the girl shook her head and said that the store didn’t enforce the policy. By this time, mercifully, the woman had ceased her hacking, and we proceeded to secure our injections.
Now we needed to procure a few grocery items, and during our forays up and down the aisles I observed several other customers sans masks. We were in the frozen meat department, and it took all of my willpower to refrain from nailing one of them in the back with a rock-solid rump roast, but fortunately reason overcame impulse, and I pretended to ignore them.
Sadly, however, as soon as we got into the car, I released my heretofore pent-up rant interlaced with every profane word and expression in the English language, and I even threw in some original ones much to chagrin of my poor wife, who patiently sat there until my vitriolic rampage had run its course.
What I fail to understand is why people simply refuse to wear masks when all the news reports are rife with stories about experts and noted scientists proclaiming the importance of face coverings in helping to rid our country of COVID-19. Yes, everyone is eagerly awaiting the arrival of a miracle vaccine that will take care of everything.
Well, don’t hold your breath. Despite what babble Trump spews daily, top scientists aren’t saying how soon a vaccine will be ready. What they are saying, however, is how important it is to wear a mask.

Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Center for Disease Control, recently said: “We have clear scientific evidence they work, and they are our best defense. I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against Covid than when I take a Covid vaccine.”
Scientists also have said that by wearing a mask, we can help save thousands of lives. Mask up. And let’s beat this damn thing.
