Wheeling Symphony Orchestra (WSO) announces the final fall concert of its chamber orchestra series, WesBanco presents SoundBites: Global Celebration, conducted by John Devlin. The concerts will be at Oglebay Wilson Lodge Glessner Ballroom on November 8 with two performances: 1:30 brunch and 6:30 dinner. Each concert will feature a specialty cocktail and a three course meal. Concerts will be limited in seating with social distancing rules in place.

The final concert of the series is a “Global Celebration” and our own WSO musicians will take center stage. Our adventure begins in Argentina, with a rousing work by the king of tango, Astor Piazzolla. We will then head to Japan and hear a haunting concerto for solo alto flute and harp by the legendary Toru Takemitsu, featuring WSO principals Barbara O’Brien (flute) and Fran Duffy (harp). Now traversing west, we arrive in Russia, where we will experience the wrenching music of Dimitri Shostakovich in his String Quartet no. 8, arranged for string orchestra. Then, we turn our attention back to Europe and explore the work of a relatively unknown but brilliant French composer from the Classical period, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, in a concerto for solo violin played by WSO Concertmaster Rachel Stegeman.

“We hope you will join us for the final concert in this new and exciting concert experience,” says Music Director John Devlin. “I am especially excited for this program because we are going Global! The pieces that we have on-tap for you are going to explore very different languages and areas of music. I am also thrilled that today’s program is going to feature three of our wonderful principal players as concerto soloists!”

Patrons will be treated to the following menu curated by Chef Raymond from Oglebay. Brunch includes miso soup with diced eggs, an entrée of syrniki, egg dumplings, kolbasa, and strawberry rhubarb jam, and Guglehupf (sweet bundt cake) with apple cranberry relish for dessert. Dinner includes a sushi roll, an entrée of beef stroganoff with tenderloin medallion, dumpling, and mushrooms, plus Guglehupf (sweet bundt cake) with apple cranberry relish for dessert. Both menus include a specialty cocktail to start the evening.
