Panhellenic Groups to hear from President Evans during Black History Month

-

Fraternities and sororities have an interesting program planned in honor of Black History Month.

Open to the public, the groups welcome President Dr. W. Franklin Evans and DEI Special Assistant Dr. Monique L. Akassi to their gathering. The noon, Wednesday, Feb. 23 event takes place in the R. Emmett Boyle Center, located in the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC).

“This event is planned as a way to get together and talk more about how the Greek community can be more accepting of others and how we can create events that cultivate diversity, equity and inclusiveness,” explained Student Activities Director Kate Billings, who oversees Greek life on campus.

President Evans will discuss his involvement in Alpha Phi Alpha Incorporated Fraternity, and the differences between National Pan-hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations in comparison to the Greek life found on the WLU campus.

Dr. Monique L. Akassi will join him in discussing her experience with the NPHC group, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Also referred to as the Divine Nine, the historically Black fraternities and sororities are: Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta.

The program will be recorded by Topper Station and archived on topperstation.com for those who miss it live and want to view it later.

WLU has 10 Greek organizations on campus with approximately 150 members. The national sororities and fraternities include Chi Omega, Alpha Xi Delta, Phi Delta Theta and Theta Xi. The remaining organizations are local sororities and fraternities, including the sororities Delta Theta Kappa, Lambda Psi Sigma and Beta Rho Epsilon. Fraternities on campus are Chi Nu and Kappa Delta Kappa, along with the co-ed fraternity Beta Theta Gamma.

West Liberty University is West Virginia’s oldest public institution of higher learning and offers more than 70 undergraduate majors, plus a growing number of graduate programs, both online and on campus.
