You’ll never forget taking that break away from all the talk on the bus ride way home so you could stare out of the window and remember your favorite moments. Like the winning wrestling pin, the swish and the finish, the perfect presentation, and that moment when THE dream came true … whether it the was first, the third, or the astonishing 44th in a row.
And you’ll never forget about the pure and utter beauty of those flashing lights during the police and fire escort, and how badly you wanted to jump off the bus to hug those most important to you. Those smiling and excited faces, the texts, the phone calls, and, OH! – the plaque they gave you? The one rightfully front and center right now?
That plaque will follow you everywhere you go from this point forward because, well, you and your teammates did THAT. And now, no one can take that away, when people see it and ask about it? You will proudly tell your story.
And if you win more – and you likely will – those plaques (and those tales, too), will join the others for all the right reasons.
And believe it or not, you’re not finished making the memories connected to this state championship because you’ve not yet walked through the halls of your school, talked with your teachers, or watched the replay enough times. But you will, and the flashbacks will mount before they diminish, and maybe soon you’ll come to realize that you, your teammates, your coaches, your parents, your school, and your community are now champions, that’s for forever.
Congratulations to you all!
Why is it that when Wheeling Park wins a state
speech championship, we do not hear anything
about what school finished 2nd 3rd etc.’
