West Liberty University’s (WLU) Student Success Center has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) to enhance its TopperGen first-generation student initiative.

Overseen by the Student Success Center, the TopperGen initiative specifically addresses the needs of first-generation students through a variety of events, activities, services, and evaluations conducted throughout the year.

The WVHEPC First-Generation Student Success Grant will assist in creating robust academic and positive experiences focused on the University’s first-generation student population.

This includes supporting activities around TopperGen Week – a week-long celebration around national First-Generation Day – that includes guest speakers, campus picnic, class presentations, and visits form first-generation alumni who have achieved success in their fields. The grant will also provide more resources for the first-generation mentoring program, which pairs incoming students with upperclassmen who have been successful in their college journey.

To improve communication among the first-generation student population, a monthly newsletter is also in the works. The publication will promote TopperGen-related events, important dates, and provide national statistics, along with spotlighting the achievements and activities of first-generation students.

Evaluating academic performance among first-generation students is another critical aspect of the program supported by the grant. Results from surveys – along with measuring academic performance metrics including GPA, retention rates, and graduation rates – will be used to identify areas needing improvement.

“We are incredibly honored and excited to receive the WVHEPC First-Generation Student Success Grant,” says WLU Student Success Center director Andrew Lewis. “This funding not only acknowledges the unique challenges these students face, but also empowers them to succeed and thrive in their academic journeys. We are committed to making a meaningful difference in their lives and helping them achieve their fullest potential,” Lewis adds.
