School Administrators:
We understand you delay and cancel classes these days based on terminology like “Could” and “Might,” and that a day with frigid temperatures is a day better spent at home instead of in our local school buildings, but many of us here in the Upper Ohio Valley can recall the magic of the “Snow Day.”
Sledding and tubing, snowball battles, building snowmen, soaked-to-the-skull toboggans, sipping hot chocolate, and shoveling the neighbors’ walkways for a few extra bucks. Sure. we had to stay close to home when we were in our single digits, but once we were a little older we could trapse the neighborhood with friends to make sure we missed nothing in our temporary wonderlands.
Now, we do understand the “Snow Day” we’re describing is actually pretty rare, and we are NOT wishing for difficult winter weather that includes inch after inch and snowplows with salt and cinders. Nope. Too many accidents with injuries and, hey, parents gotta go to work “no matter” most of the time, right?
Right.
We get it – honestly – BUT what we are encouraging you to remember is that – IF and WHEN – during those magnificent winter days, YOU weren’t saddled with something called “Schoology” and “web-based learning management”. Right?
Right.
So, we implore you, keep the gift of the “Snow Day” unadulterated and let them make memories like we’ve cherished for a lifetime.
