Novotney: ‘So, is the Suspension Bridge closed? Or what?’

-

So, there they are. The barriers/bollard anchors. On the Wheeling Island side, and on the city side. The signage was quietly removed, too.

Slick.

So, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge IS closed to vehicular traffic? Is that correct, Secretary Stephen Todd Rumbaugh? So, that means no headlines about oversized motorcoaches and greyhound buses? And no more debates over weight limits, intervals, and public safety?

That’s it? It’s over … done?

A bus on a bridge.
This tour bus became stuck on the eastside height barriers on the Wheeling Suspension Bridge when attempting to cross the historic space in mid-2019. (The photo was found on Facebook, but no name was attached.)

Right?

If not, then what’s the deal? Spill it. Confirm or deny. Give us the scoop? What’s next for the nation’s original “Gateway to the West”? After spending $19 million on beautifying and repairing it?

The media has asked over and over and over ever since the rehab-and-spruce-up project was completed a year ago, and all that’s been offered has been, “No one seems to know.”

Well, SOMEONE knows SOMETHING, ladies and gentlemen, or the barriers/bollard anchors would not have been installed.

Right?

If that’s correct, Secretary Rumbaugh, please explain the reasons for closing the historical span, and then let’s start the conversation right now about a new bridge.

Please.

A pole with a lock on it.
The black barriers now blocking vehicular traffic to the Suspension Bridge are locked into place. But why? Hopefully, state officials will release details in the near future.
