My name is Riley Watkins, and I’m running as a Republican for the West Virginia House of Delegates, District 5. I’m a 21-year-old Exercise Physiology student at West Liberty University, a fitness entrepreneur, and a former football player at Wheeling Central and Mercyhurst University.
I did not plan on running for political office at 21, but I feel like our home is losing. West Virginia ranks among the highest in obesity, drug addiction, and depression.
When I talk to my parents and grandparents, they tell me of a time when downtown Wheeling was the place to be, thriving with lively shops, booming businesses, and a winning spirit in a place that once served as the Capitol of West Virginia.
However, when I talk with friends my age, they tell me something different. They want to leave. They all say “I need to get out of the valley.” I believe young people would like to stay, but they don’t see opportunity here.
I’m tired of watching our home lose. Once elected, Wheeling will win again. Small businesses will thrive, young families will want to stay, and good paying jobs will return. Likewise, we will end the drug addiction, obesity, and mental health crises that have affected our community for far too long.
Wheeling will once again be a place that young people dream of starting their business in and become the great city our parents and grandparents remember. Wheeling needs a fighter in Charleston who will make this vision a reality. Let’s win together!
