Trinity Health System School of Medical Laboratory Science Achieves Maximum 10-Year NAACLS Accreditation

Steubenville, Ohio, June 1, 2026 – Driven by a shared commitment to clinical excellence and cultivating the next generation of healthcare professionals, Trinity Health System is proud to announce that its School of Medical Laboratory Science Program has been awarded the maximum 10-year accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

As the premier agency for ensuring the highest standards of education in clinical laboratory sciences, NAACLS grants this prestigious 10-year status only to programs that demonstrate exceptional educational quality and consistent student success. The comprehensive evaluation process involved an extensive self-study, an on-site visit by a team of experienced laboratory educators, and a rigorous review by the Review Committee for Accredited Programs (RCAP).

During their evaluation, site visitors commended the Trinity Health System program for its “outstanding outcome measures, including BOC results, satisfaction surveys, and retention and placement rates,” culminating in the official recommendation to the NAACLS Board of Directors for the full 10-year term.

Trinity administration made the decision to address the shortage of qualified laboratory personnel by opening this program in 2019, Constance L. Moore, MEd, MLS (ASCP)CM, Program Director, School of Medical Laboratory Science, Trinity Health System, said. The faculty and staff are teaching the next generation of MLSs so they can continue Trinity’s commitment to the community by giving our providers the accurate and reliable test results necessary to diagnose and monitor disease states in their patients. The 10-year accreditation by the NAACLS Board of Directors is the standard to which all lab programs aspire.

The intensive 11-month Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program offers students a robust blend of lecture and hands-on laboratory experiences across essential disciplines, including Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Immunology, Hematology, and Body Fluid Analysis.

Students learn in real time, performing critical diagnostic tests alongside and under the direct supervision of seasoned laboratory professionals. Afternoons are dedicated to mastering the clinical theory behind each test, bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world health and disease management. Following graduation, students are fully prepared and encouraged to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (BOC) exam.

“One of the attractions of our curriculum is that there are no ‘student labs’ as in other programs,” Moore said. “Our students are completely immersed in the laboratory environment for 40 hours per week. They probably don’t realize at first all they pick up from the experienced MLSs who are supervising them. They participate in STAT testing, critical result communications, and instrument troubleshooting, all of which make them very comfortable in the laboratory environment when they enter the workforce, even if it’s not at Trinity. Our graduates are working in hospital labs across the country. We even have a graduate who works at SeaWorld in San Diego!

By securing the maximum accreditation standard, Trinity Health System reinforces its dedication to fostering academic excellence and building a resilient healthcare workforce for the Ohio Valley and beyond.
