Once again, Orrick team members and Wheeling volunteers are stepping into the community to show LBGTQIA+ allyship and to come together around community improvement. With the support of several local businesses and groups, Orrick is hosting the 10th annual “Pride in Wheeling Day” on Friday, June 12 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Pride in Wheeling was established to enhance community engagement and to create a forum for celebrating and promoting conversations around inclusion and belonging. Since the event’s inception, the City of Wheeling’s mayor has proclaimed the date of the event each year as “Pride in Wheeling Day” citywide. The Pride in Wheeling Committee is thankful for the city’s continued support.
This year, the committee is also coordinating with several local businesses: Dinsmore; The Friendlier City Project; NAMI of Greater Wheeling; Sherwin-Williams Paint Store of Washington, PA; and WesBanco.
In prior years, volunteers have planted flowers, painted playgrounds, covered graffiti, painted community murals and contributed to other community service projects. On June 12, participants will paint a mural designed by local artists Amanda Carney, Mindi Yarbrough and Vondel Bell. The mural includes West Virginia’s state motto – Montani Semper Liberi, a Latin phrase that translates to “Mountaineers are always free.” Volunteers will also clean up along Heritage Trail and help restore the Woodsdale playground.
Committee Chair Nick Roxby said: “We’re pleased to host this event and support our local LGBTQIA+ community. It’s a crucial time to build allyship and understanding, and we’re glad to bring people together. Love and working together with those around us strengthen our bonds and create a more welcoming and inclusive community for everyone. We express our appreciation for the City of Wheeling, as well as all volunteers, artists and partner organizations who consistently act as allies and support Pride in Wheeling.”
