WV Dept. of Education Launches Academic Coaching Initiative

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) will host a three-day professional learning session to prepare academic coaches for the 2026-2027 school year. The West Virginia Impact Plus (WVImpact+) Coaching Initiative will focus on the supports schools need to increase student outcomes.

WVImpact+ builds on statewide investments made through the Third Grade Success Act. It offers a framework for partnerships with classroom teachers through coaching structures that target student success.

The initiative provides a research-driven approach to build capacity in public schools so teachers can turn what they have learned into everyday practices. Key to the program is the opportunity for educators to receive feedback and reflect on their approaches to teaching to elevate their instruction and depth of knowledge.

“The advances we are experiencing in our public schools are the result of hard work, collaboration and sustained support,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “The WVDE, our counties, our school community and our teachers are working together to ensure that we continue to address the challenges that exist with the expectation that proficiency will increase among all students.”

The WVImpact+ Conference is Monday, July 20 – Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Embassy Suites, 300 Court Street, Charleston, West Virginia 25301. Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m.
