An OPEN LETTER to … W.Va. Gov. Patrick Morrisey … about the School Clothing Voucher Program …

-

Governor Morrisey:

We respectfully ask that you restart the School Clothing Voucher Program by using a small portion of the revenue surplus recently collected from West Virginians.

We know you cited a “structural deficit” in the program weeks ago, but honestly, Governor, we had no idea what that meant and, at the time, we believed you would get it fixed so our families could get that little bit of help before the children head back to the classrooms.

We understand it’s a lot of money, Governor, but the need is real, and you only need to peer into the face of a poverty-stricken West Virginia child to confirm that to be true. And sadly, sir, you wouldn’t have to look too far to find such a child either.

There’s a stigma attached to poverty, Governor, and, as we all realize, children can be cruel without genuine intention, but it still hits hard to a poor kid’s core. So, if it’s possible to begin a new academic year without such angry angst, it would be very much appreciated by mothers, fathers, and guardians across our 55 counties if you would find a way to restart the clothing voucher program.

We appreciate your time and consideration, sir.

Sincerely,

Montani Semper Liberi
