WHEELING, W.VA. – A portion of the Heritage Trail near the Suspension Bridge in Downtown Wheeling will close beginning Thursday, Sept. 24, to accommodate construction of the Gateway Center. Closure signs will be posted in the area.
Trail users are encouraged to follow the suggested detour around the construction. Those traveling south should exit the trail at Fifth Street, follow Fifth Street to Main Street, and then continue to Heritage Port. Those traveling north should exit the trail at Heritage Port, follow Market Street to Fifth Street, and rejoin the trail there.
The affected section of the Heritage Trail is expected to reopen in May 2027. The City of Wheeling appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this important project moves forward.
