An OPEN LETTER to … Everyone Responsible for the Re-Opening of the Washington Avenue Bridge …

-

Dear Wonderful People:

Praise Jesus, it’s a miracle!!

Not only have you replaced the Washington Avenue Bridge, but it’s on time despite a near-tragedy last winter when the span collapsed with a couple of workers. Gone are the gaudy green railings and reduced weight limit signs, and soon our up-the-gut-of-the-city artery will flow again for first responders and residents alike.

Let’s be honest, when the Washington Avenue bridge closed about 10 months ago, life shifted – and not in a positive way. Sure, the bridge had been closed before, but this time it felt like an eternity, and the drive-around was confusing at first and congested most of the time.

We’ve followed the updates throughout the year, and the series of drone videos by Mechelle Robinson has permitted us to witness a $5.3-million process we wish NEVER to endure again! But, yes, we know we’ll have to do the same – total replacement – must take place with the Shilling Bridge in the Overlook area of Elm Grove.

Right now, the engineers and architects with the state Division of Highways have the $2-million project on the drawing board, and we’re also hearing rumbles about the Junior Avenue Bridge, too. BUT for now, we shall rejoice on October 18th with live music, a parade, a few food trucks, and maybe even a few bouncy houses for the kids.

Yes, it’s that big of a deal because our moms always told us that we’d appreciate the best things in life only after they were taken away, and that sure did prove true with the Washington Avenue Bridge.

It’s been a decade of detours around the city, so thank you again to all involved … and someone please call Pope Leo!

Sincerely,

Another Detour Down
