An OPEN LETTER to Our Fellow Americans:
Not sure about you, but we feel kind of gross following the events that took place on Capitol Hill on Wednesday. It’s something of a slimy feeling that won’t wipe off because we all know we’re all to blame no matter who we are, what party we belong to, or where we live.
It is true that many of us can recall when our after-school cartoons were replaced by the Watergate Hearings and when Walter Cronkite interrupted regular programming to offer details about the shooting that took place on the Kent State campus. But our children watched as protesters transformed into rioters when breaching the U.S. Capitol.
Many of the president’s supporters spent Thursday on social media attempting to distance their MAGA man from blame, claiming that those who illegally breached the building were not “Trumpers” but instead professional rioters from Antifa and #BlackLivesMatter who were disguised by wearing those red MAGA hats.
Meanwhile, camera footage of the siege has revealed that particular claim not to be completely true, and that involves the video W.Va. Del. Derrick Evans (R-Wayne) posted to social media showing himself participating in the well-documented criminal activity. Evans claims to be an independent member of the media, and what that means is that he is not a member of the media at all. He deleted the video and then lawyered-up to release a statement Thursday that included the Wayne County resident’s admission that he did enter through an already opened door. President Trump, though, said last night in a recorded, edited video that all the intruders of the U.S. Capitol do not represent our country.
Evans’ participation has attracted the national news, and several members of the House of Delegates have called for his resignation, including Del. Erikka Storch (R-3rd), who posted the following statement to her Facebook timeline yesterday evening: “I believe he will be held accountable for his actions by both our legal system and by our rules; however, I would like to see him resign so as to not overshadow the important work we have been elected to do with this dark cloud.”
The statement from Evans’ counsel, however, also revealed his client will refuse to resign his position, so “dark cloud” it is for Storch and the House of Delegates and also for our country because a line has been crossed that cannot be uncrossed by those who invaded the Capitol and by the president for whom we voted.
