An OPEN LETTER to … The Person Who Can Keep Tractor-Trailers Off Interstate 70 Forever …

To Whom It May Concern:

The term “leisurely” comes to our minds when remembering our recent drives along Interstate 70 from St. Clairsville to downtown Wheeling. Dare we say, “Peaceful”?

Granted, the skies were blue, and the sun was shining during our trips, but the cruise wasn’t smooth because of the weather but instead because of the absence of those smothering semi-tractor-trailers.

So, our question is this: Can it stay that way? Please. Just don’t move the signs at the splits near the Ohio Valley Mall and Elm Grove. We know those truckers are hauling our future stuff, and we appreciate them for what they do for the economy, but the rigs they drive are enormous, and they can be deadly.

A highway with trucks.
There have been many accidents at the intersection of Interstate 70 and I-470 in Elm Grove.

So, why not separate the thru-way motorists and truckers permanently so the semis never travel through Wheeling Tunnel but still have access to all-points Wheeling from the exit ramp on I-470? Plus, I-70 slithers its way through the city with a few tight turns and curves until merging with I-470, and such a separation would allow that freeway fuse to be safer than it is now.

Sincerely,

Driving Like Sunday on a Monday

  1. Hey Sunday Driver, here is a better idea, why don’t you just stay off the highway and stay on the city streets and state routes. How about if you restrict me from anymore roads we get a reduction in highway use tax. I have a job to do and a set amount of hours to do it in. And like you I also want to get home to see my family. I have over 2 million miles without a ticket and it wasn’t even in a commercial vehicle. Seem to think that’s more miles than you have drove in your life.

    • Thanks, Dennis for taking the time to make a comment. I invite you to think it through, as a professional, so you realize I’m not restricting you from performing your job or from getting home to your family. Have a great weekend.

  2. My question is this. Why did the build the tunnel in the first place? It would have been easier to just route I 70 along the path of the current I 470.. they should look at making redesignating 470 into I 70, and making current I 70 a local express way for commuting.

  3. Good evening. On a similar tone. Is it me or has anyone else seem to notice that there seems to be fewer accidents on I-70 in Wheeling since the speed limit was lowered to 45.

Should they consider something similar for what I call Dallas Pike Hill. I do not care if you drop it to 50 or 55 with large flashing signs across the road, video recording, horns, buzzers or whatever and if necessary a permanent nice spot for a deputy sheriff somewhere on the hill.
