An OPEN LETTER to … Those Taking a Knee

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

James Madison was one our country’s founding fathers, our fourth president, and he also drafted the Bill of Rights that became the law of the land in 1791. Madison thought so much of the above text, he made it numero uno, and it is likely the most well-known of the 10 original constitutional amendments in America because we sure do love to express our feelings whenever we wish to open our mouths online or in-person.

We are free to do so because there is no law against it, but nearly four years ago millions of Americans made one up because Colin Kaepernick opted to exercise his freedom of speech while performing  peaceful protests against police brutality on black males. After many other players joined Kaepernick, the NFL quit broadcasting the National Anthem, and President Trump called on league owners to fire the protesters for exercising their First Amendment rights.

Trump insisted Kaepernick and the others were showing disrespect to the American Flag and to the soldiers who have defended and are defending our country, but No. 45 had it backward then and still does today. From the very beginning, our American military has been charged with the defense of the United States Constitution, and those heroes have successfully preserved the American way of life for oe than 200 years … and that has included those last nine words from above …

… “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

If you want to kneel to help spread Kaepernick’s message, then kneel. If not, don’t.

That’s the law after all.

Sincerely,

The Get It Now Gang
