Board of Governors Reject Contract Extension for President W. Franklin Evans

West Liberty University’s Board of Governors met today in its regularly scheduled meeting held at 4 p.m. in Shaw Hall and on Zoom. 

After calling the meeting to order and covering most of its agenda (click here for complete agenda), Chairman Rich Lucas requested a motion to retire to executive session at 5:23 p.m. pursuant to West Virginia Code section 6-9A-4. The motion was made and passed unanimously.

At 6:18 p.m., the board returned from executive session. 

A motion to offer a one-year contract extension to the president’s contract, extending from Jan. 1, 2023 and ending Dec. 31, 2023, was made and seconded. After taking a voice vote, the result of the vote was 8 – 4, with nays winning. Aye votes were submitted by board members Michael Baker, Arlene Brantley, Dr. Jamie Evick and Stephanie Shaw. 

At the conclusion of the vote, the meeting was adjourned.

Baker, Wheeling; Arlene Brantley, Atlanta, Ga.; Richard Carter, Wheeling; Thomas Cervone, Knoxville, Tenn.; Dr. Jamie Evick (secretary), Glen Dale, W.Va.; Ryan Glanville (WLU staff member), Wheeling; Sydney Burkle, (student government president), Wheeling, W.Va.; David H. McKinley, Wheeling; Jason Metz (faculty member), Pittsburgh; and Stephanie Shaw, Columbus, Ohio. 

The West Liberty University Board of Governors, created by the West Virginia Legislature as its governing body, consists of nine members appointed by the Governor of West Virginia and three elected representatives by students, faculty, and staff.
