Another annual holiday event is slated to make its much-anticipated return next week.
Christmas in the Village, a yearly community holiday-themed celebration in the village of Powhatan Point, gets underway Saturday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m.
Parking is available at the football field at the marina, and festivalgoers will receive a tri-fold pamphlet, detailing all of the day’s events and a map to locate them.
’Tis the season, indeed.
Now in its 15th year, Christmas in the Village was suspended last November because of the pandemic. What that means for this year is a renewed interest, not only from the public but from crafters and vendors as well.
“I would say we’re getting a lot more questions about stuff leading up to the event,” said Jeremy Sims, president of the event committee. “We have more crafters this year. We’ve pretty much got everything squared away and ready. There are close to 60-65 crafters.”
Events get underway at 10 a.m. and run through 5 p.m., though Sims said many of the crafters start tearing down around 4:30.
Afterward, the Powhatan Point Fire Department will hold its parade at 6:30 p.m. While both groups are separate, the parade works in conjunction with Christmas in the Village for a true community-style event.
There will be live music provided by a number of local bands, including Powhatan Point’s own Usual Suspects. In between performances, D.J. Daner will be spinning music to keep festival-goers entertained.
The pamphlets will be a great help in directing festival-goers where to venture to find what they are looking for.
True Community Event
While the event itself will feature food, music, crafters, games, and much more, other areas of the community are getting involved.
“Some of the businesses in town will be running specials. The restaurants and some of the bars will have food specials, like the legion and VFD,” Sims said. “Other businesses will be running specials throughout the day.
“The map will have numbers by the different places in town and will help tell everyone where to go.”
There will be plenty of entertainment for the younger kids, including a puppet show, a magician, and someone on-hand to shape balloons. There will be rides and inflatables, including a train ride around the grounds.
This, of course, is in addition to an appearance by Santa during a pancake breakfast with the big man himself.
While the weather can change, Sims noted the current extended forecast is showing low to mid-50s for next Saturday which, given it’s now November, is an ideal temperature for the festival.
“In 2019 during setup I think it was around 12 degrees that morning,” Simms recalled with a laugh.
