The fat man and family were “enjoying” the 80-plus degree temps yesterday when we decided it was time to venture out and find some form of refreshment.
Being we live in St. Clairsville, we’ve bypassed temptation enough times recently, driving back and forth along National Road.
For temptation sits at 252 National Road East in the form of a large, inviting, inflatable snowman, beckoning us to stop by.
Temptation won out this balmy Saturday afternoon and we stopped in to (finally) sample Frostys Frozen Frenzy and see what all the hype has been about.
Three large servings of deliciousness later and this new (for 2023) shaved ice location had won itself three new customers. We shall be back. Oh yes, we shall.
Situated in the former sideshow lot of Thomas Auto Centers previous location sits a shaved ice stand, complete with decorations for the impending Fourth of July holiday. There are tables and benches, complete with shade, for customers to sit and enjoy their purchases.
There’s also a decent amount of room to park.
But what draws people in are the frozen, tasty treats.
A quick scan of the menu board offers a litany of traditional and specialty flavors (read: combinations). Those specialty flavors are described in detail on an accompanying sheet at the window.
The stand’s mainstay, shaved ice, is offered in four sizes: small, regular, large, and extra-large. The stand also serves soft-serve ice cream, with or without sprinkles, along with drinks.
Opened in May, Frostys is open noon until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and stay open an extra half hour on Friday and Saturday. It recently expanded its Sunday hours, staying open until 8 p.m.
Each time we’ve driven by, we’ve noticed more and more folks seated at those benches and we figured it was finally time to check it out.
The Treats
Given the heat and humidity, yours truly was feeling a wee bit tropical and opted for the blue coconut flavor. The girlfriend went for green apple, and the daughter played it safe with a lemon-lime.
For first-timers, we decided to go with smalls but did make sure to order our frozen desserts frenzy-style—which puts a large portion of soft-serve ice cream on the inside of the shaved ice.
Having never ordered before, we weren’t prepared for just how much frozen treat you received for a small, prompting the utterance of a dad joke inquiring about the extra large.
But in truth, between the shaved ice, soft serve ice cream, candied gummies, whipped cream, and other edible accouterments atop our shaved ice, we were impressed.
Each container came with both a spoon and a straw. Puzzling at first, but it made sense as we ate.
Honestly, there was enough whipped cream atop that qualifies as its own frozen treat. But by the time I reached the shaved ice underneath, it had already started to mix slightly with the ice cream, offering a creamy and cool combination.
For mine, the mixing of the soft serve balanced out the coconut flavors, which initially were quite subtle. But as the ice cream was finished and I dove deeper into the melting shaved ice at the bottom, I had to switch from spoon to straw. And then, the coconut flavor really hit home. And it was good.
I sampled the green apple and, while I wouldn’t call it sour, it had the slight tartness you’d expect from green apples.
I was asked to take a photo of the menu, so we can mark off what we’d tried already so we can sample our way through the menu on return visits. Done and done.
I felt like we received quite a lot of dessert bang for our $5 apiece, well worth one (or more) return visits. I’d recommend the same to anyone, looking either for a tasty dessert or an excellent way to cool off during the summer heat.
