The official start of spring is just around the bend on March 20, and with the official unofficial start to better weather and new beginnings, many Ohio Valley residents will begin their Spring cleaning regiments.

With that in mind, the J.B. Green Team released its 2022 Community Clean-up Schedule for Belmont County on Monday.

The first clean-up is set for Wheeling Township on Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Wheeling Township Garage at 71240 Main Street in Fairpoint. The next will be in Colerain Township on April 2, same times, at the RST Excavating Garage.

Those are the first two of 10 community clean-ups in Belmont County, along with the tires only collection date on June 25 at the Belmont County Fairgrounds.

While those participating in the community clean-ups must prove residency in either Jefferson or Belmont Counties in order to participate, the Wheeling Township clean-up, for example, is not limited to only Wheeling Township residents. As long as you live in either county covered by the J.B. Green Team, you can participate in any of the clean-up dates and locales.

“As long as you live in Belmont or Jefferson Counties, you can go to any of the clean-ups scheduled,” admitted Tammy Shepherd, the Green Team’s Belmont County Director.

What’s Accepted

While these are clean-up dates, not every item is allowed to be dropped off at each event. In fact, there is a list of items previous participants likely know quite well that isn’t allowed.

For instance, no electronics or televisions, no mattresses or box springs, and no household batteries. There yearly hazardous waste collection will be held, and the date will be announced later in the year.

No paint, liquids, fluorescent rubes, ballasts, exposed insulation or other hazardous materials are allowed. Neither are food or diaper waste, leaves, tree, or grass clippings, and no construction or demolition brick. No oversized items and no tires at the regular community cleanups, at least in Belmont County.

“The tire collection will be in June,” Shepherd said. “We used to take them at the community collections, but the company we are using will only make one trip to Belmont County, so we only accept tires at the one tire collection and not every community collection.

During the tire cleanup, there’s a limit of 10 tires per vehicle that can be dropped off. According to Shepherd, that’s based on an EPA recommendation that individuals are not allowed to travel with more than 10 tires without a special license.

“They are trying to prevent illegal dumping of tires,” she noted. “If the police or state patrol see someone with a bunch of tires, they might question them as to where they were going and what they were doing with them.”

Other Items

The community clean-ups also used to accept electronics, but the company that previously worked with the Green Team in Belmont no longer makes the trek to the county.

That company will still take electronics drop-offs at its place of business.

Have some items you need to get rid of that aren’t listed as accepted on the community clean-up flyer? You may still have options.

One is go to the J.B. Green Team’s website, here, and check this PDF which lists a number of various products and items that, while not accepted by the Green Team, may provide hints on where to take it.

If not, Shepherd also mentioned contacting the Green Team directly and inquire what other options are available for certain items.

“You can call us, and we may be able to give you some options for items that we can’t accept,” Shepherd said.
