It’s fitting that today I choose to review a bastion of tasty treats in Cadiz, given the unseasonably warm temperatures.

I certainly could have used a return trip whilst I was melting in the near summer’s end heat at Nelson Field in Bellaire. Yes, I made the mistake of wearing a black t-shirt to the game. Fortunately, I don’t burn, but it certainly felt like it.

I digress. Today, I’m here to tell perhaps the one or two people remaining who’ve never heard about Ice Cream Island in Cadiz, to make your way out U.S. 250 and stop by.

Located at 812 E. Market St. in Cadiz and locally owned by Austin and Caitlyn Dowdle, Ice Cream Island serves up a ton of great items.

Ice Cream Island has an extensive menu, full of both hot foods for your lunch and dinner requirements, along with a ton of frozen and tasty treats.

But the reason my partner in crime and I made the trek out 250 was likely the same reason everyone else did so this summer, judging by the constant updates on my Facebook feed—mason jar milkshakes.

Maybe it’s the West Virginia native in me, but you put something in a mason jar, you immediately have my attention.

When that something is full of chocolate, vanilla, and other assortments of sugary goodness, then you definitely have my attention.

The are all different kinds of flavors to the milkshakes. You’ll see the various creations on Facebook, but each isn’t available every day. It’s best to check with the staff upon arrival to determine which shakes are offered.

Safe to say, no matter which, you won’t be disappointed.

The Food

We naturally opted for the mason jars. She chose a Smores flavored one, while I opted for the funnel cake milk shake with vanilla on the inside.

My mason jar was full of a tasty vanilla shake, filled to the brim. There was a chocolate “drizzling” on the top that extended to the outside of the top of the mason jar.

Sitting atop my shake was a funnel cake, drenched in powdered sugar. A straw protrudes through an opening in the funnel cake, so once I worked my way through the sugary fried dough, I could then get to work on my milk shake.

Ever try to drive and eat a funnel cake around a straw? I don’t advise it and we had to pull over fairly quickly as to not cause an accident. Could I have waited until I got home? Sure. But why?

Her Smores shake had a tower of marshmallows on a stick protruding from the shake, surrounded by       a graham cracker, whipped cream, and Hershey’s chocolate—all the hallmarks of your classic Smores sandwich.

The shakes received two thumbs up apiece from us and I look forward to my next jaunt to Cadiz, when I’ll most certainly stop by.

Speaking of which, if you’re itching for your own mason jar milkshakes, or any number of Ice Cream Island’s other tasty options, you’ll have to wait a bit.

The shop is temporarily closed and won’t reopen again until Tuesday, Sept. 21. For more information, stop by its Facebook page listed above for constant updates.

It further hit home during the Bellaire-Cambridge game I took in earlier today as I made the mistake of wearing a black t-shirt to the game. I regretted it before kickoff and was ready “
