James Urban Greene, 92, of Wheeling, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born December 14, 1930, the son of the late Thomas and Rita (Gallaher) Greene.

James was a Catholic by Faith. He was graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School, class of 1948, where he participated in football and basketball. He was a member of the basketball team at Central which won the State Catholic title in 1947. Played professional baseball in the minor leagues with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Detroit. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran, served 28 years with City of Wheeling Police department, retiring as a Detective Sergeant. He was member of F.O.P. Lodge #38.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy; a son James; a brother Thomas Greene and a sister Rita Greene.

Surviving are his loving wife of 34 years Barbara J. Raszkiewicz Greene, his children Theresa, Donald, Michael, Richard and David; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and two special “sises” Anna Marie Raszkiewicz and Michaeline Raszkiewicz, many dear friends.

Greene played professional baseball in the minor leagues with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Detroit.

Friends will be received on Wednesday April 5, 2023 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Cathedral of St. Joseph, Wheeling. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am with Monsignor Joseph Peterson as celebrant. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

Moundsville Veteran Honor Guard will conduct full graveside military services.
