From the files of “he’s just a freshman” comes the performance from Herbert Hoover’s Dane Hatfield against Winfield.
The younger brother of senior all-stater Devin Hatfield, the younger Hatfield certainly made his presence felt against the Generals.
Dane ran for 240 yards and four touchdowns while passing for 140 yards and another score. His TD runs covered 95, 32, 18, and 61 yards as the youngest still not old enough to drive a car displayed some heroic-like capabilities in the 37-14 victory.
Hoover coach Joey Fields commented to the Herald Dispatch that despite his age, Hatfield plays like a seasoned veteran.
It’ll be interesting to see how Dane Hatfield develops as the season progresses and he goes up against some of the best of what Class AA has to offer.
Welcome Back Todd
Eight carries. That’s all Martinsburg’s Braxton Todd received against Musselman. But in those eight carries, his worth to the Bulldogs hopes of returning to state glory were quite apparent.
The Division I recruit ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns, averaging nearly 23 yards per carry. As Todd continues to recover from an injury that sidelined him in Martinsburg’s Week 1 contest, he’ll certainly see more carries.
Not “Dunn” “Yet
South Charleston quarterback Trey Dunn continues to show why he’s considered one of the early frontrunners for the Kennedy Award.
Playing against Capital, Dunn threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns while he added 105 on the ground with two more scores. The result saw the Black Eagles hand the Cougars a 42-14 defeat on the turf at the University of Charleston Stadium.
Highlanders Rolling Early
Huntington is off to a 2-0 start with impressive wins against both Parkersburg and now a 38-0 blanking of Hurricane.
That’s two weeks of shutting down some of the state’s top Class AAA talent at quarterback in PHS’ Bryson Singer and the Redskins’ Ismael Borrerro, whom the Highlanders’ defense picked off twice.
This was Huntington’s first shutout since a 63-0 blanking of St. Albans during the 2018 season. This team isn’t all defense, however.
Junior QB Gavin Lochow had another solid outing, passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns whilst rushing for 134 yards and another score.
Huntington will receive its stiffest test of the season this week when they take on a fellow undefeated team from Cabell County, the Cabell Midland Knights.
An Off Week
Princeton’s Grant Cochran attempted only eight passes, completing two, against a stingy Bluefield defense, finishing with a 33-yard scoring strike to Jon Wellman in the fourth quarter as the Tigers pulled out the 39-36 win at home.
Princeton’s game plan consisted of a heavy dose of the run to keep the Beavers’ offense off the field. The Tigers ran the ball 32 times against just eight pass attempts.
Other Notables
Brady Green, Shaun Booth, Van
Bulldogs’ backfield tandem ran for 224 yards and 183 yards, respectively, with Green totaling two touchdowns and Booth three in a 52-28 romp against PikeView.
Chase Edwards, University/Cyrus Traugh, Parkersburg South
Hawks’ QB threw for 197 yards and four touchdowns as University took care of Parkersburg South. Edwards also tossed two picks, however, one which went into the cable hands of Patriots’ junior Cyrus Traugh.
Traugh finished with nine catches for 115 yards and a touchdown on offense and ran for 30 yards on five carries with a TD on the ground. Traugh has 20 catches for 240 yards and two TDs through two games for PSHS.
Ty Bartrum, Spring Valley
Timberwolves receiver had an all-around solid game to help his team back to .500 with a win against Parkersburg. Bartrum had four receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, added a rushing touchdown, and intercepted two Parkersburg passes, returning one for a pick six.
Ryan Wolfe, Cabell Midland
Midland’s option attack sometimes lulls opponents into thinking the Knights are incapable of passing the ball. Ryan Wolfe reminded Riverside that he’s more than capable of attacking defenses through the air in a 56-0 win.
Wolfe passed for 227 yards on 6 of 8 attempts, connecting on three touchdowns passes. He added a 26-yard rushing touchdown.
Sam Bradfield, Keyser
Bradfield rumbled for 248 yards and three touchdowns in a big win for the Golden Tornado against Berkely Springs.
