The Barton Volunteer Fire Department is committed to keeping our community informed about the progress of our new fire station. We understand the community’s eagerness to see the new facility completed and want to share the progress and delays in construction.
The required Phase I and Phase II Environmental Assessment for our property revealed elevated levels of metals in the ground where railroad tracks previously ran. This discovery triggered additional testing and analysis mandated by the EPA, whom we have been working closely with, in addition to the USDA. To secure loan funding from the USDA, we must comply with the EPA. At this time, we are working with multiple entities to re-survey the property and perform additional testing. Once given approval to proceed, we will begin finalizing architectural renderings.
Public safety is our top priority—not just in emergency response but also in ensuring the safety of the environment and those working on this project. While these additional steps have extended our timeline, they are critical to ensuring that the new fire station is built on safe, stable ground and meets all environmental and safety regulations.
We appreciate the patience and support of our community as we work through these challenges. This new station is a vital investment in the safety and future of Barton, and we are committed to completing it with the highest standards of safety and quality. It is our hope to break ground for the new facility by fall, as we are celebrating our 75th anniversary.
