Regional Exhibition Showcases Contemporary Artists Inspired by Appalachian Craft Traditions
WHEELING, WV — Oglebay Institute’s Stifel Fine Arts Center will present New Appalachia 2026: Traditional Craft, Contemporary Practice, a juried exhibition celebrating the evolution of tradition Appalachian crafts into contemporary artistic expression. The exhibition will be on view September 17 through October 31, 2026.
Featuring artists from across nine Appalachian states, New Appalachia 2026 explores how the region’s rich craft traditions continue to influence and inspire contemporary art. As the only state located entirely within the Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia serves as an ideal setting for this comprehensive regional showcase.
The exhibition features a diverse collection of works in ceramics, fiber arts, furniture, metalwork, printmaking and woodcraft, highlighting both the preservation of traditional techniques and the innovative ways artists are reimagining them for the 21st century.
Opening Reception
The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday, September 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Guests will enjoy refreshments, live entertainment and the opportunity to be among the first to experience the exhibition.

Changing exhibitions encourage appreciation and understanding of visual art through direct engagement with original works in traditional and nontraditional mediums.
