Ohio County Students Leap into Literature Fair

-

Throughout several Ohio County Schools elementary programs, students in grades K-5 have had the opportunity to participate in a unique opportunity:  the annual West Virginia Reading Association Literature Fair.

Several schools are currently finishing up their school-level competitions, and students who place 1st-3rd in their respective divisions will advance to the county level, scheduled at Wheeling Park High School on 10/23 at 9:30.

“Literature Fair brings back memories of a science or social studies fair, but one that’s specific for literature; it’s a unique way to showcase not only a love for reading, but a love for a specific, special book to the participant,” explains Karin Butyn, OCS Director of Public Relations.  Students who opt to participate can choose a book or poem from a variety of genres, including fiction, science fiction, mystery, adventure, or historical fiction.  Divisions split with children in grades K-2 and grades 3-5.

“Students explore elements of reading like setting, tone, mood, and the author’s purpose.   They also create a backboard that allows participants to show what they know about their book selection and express their own creativity,” adds Butyn.

Students who advanced from their school level will present at the county level in the JB Chambers Performing Arts Center starting at 9:30 on 10/23.  Students who place at the county level will proceed to the Northern Panhandle Regional Literature Fair at West Liberty University on November 1st, beginning at 9.
