Today’s schedule at Casa de Hughes was a little busy, so for today’s food review, I’m breaking out a visit from a few months ago that I hadn’t gotten around to writing—yet.
That being said, yet is finally here, so without further ado, or procrastination, take your pick, I’m going to give my thoughts on a relatively recent addition to the greater Wheeling food landscape: Elm Gove Subs.
Located inside the Elm Terrace shopping center at 8 Elm Terrace, Elm Grove Subs sandwich shop offers a large assortment of subs, burgers, hoagies, cheesesteaks, and assortments of sides and salads.
I honestly delayed my review as I planned to return to try out their subs. As I’ve stated previously, I grew up in the North Park section of Wheeling. For those who did, there was no place better to order subs than the former Hoagie Shack along National Road in the Fulton-section of Wheeling.
When it closed, a small part of my youth—yes, I obviously like to eat—closed with it. Since then, I’ve been searching for a quality replacement to no avail.
Anyway, my original plan when we stopped was to get an Italian hoagie, but after quickly surveying the menu, I found something I wanted to try to a greater degree.
My daughter joined me, and thus, she continued her “chicken and fries” tour of the Ohio Valley. Seriously, the girl eats like five things. I know there are plenty of parents that can relate.
What caught my attention was a bowl of poutine. For the unfamiliar, the poutine bowl contains fries and white cheddar cheese curds covered with brown gravy. It’s a dish that originated in the Quebec province in Canada. It’s a dish that’s found its way into the United States and, depending on where you get it, has received its own regional touches.
The Food
I’m probably not the best to comment on the quality of the poutine, in regard to standard poutine quality. But in terms of overall taste, it was a scrumptious combination of flavors.
Good gravy always adds to the overall taste, but placed atop crispy fries and cheese curds, it was a worthwhile order. And for less than $10 for a large order, it was a lot of food. I mean A LOT. How much you ask? It’s not often I can’t finish the entirety of my order. Well, on this day, there were enough leftovers to warrant taking it home and saving some for later.
Also, even reheated, it still tasted good.
My daughter enjoyed her tenders and fries, especially the fries. The tenders were good as well according to her, but given she’s had chicken tenders basically everywhere, she can get picky about tenders cracking her Top 5. No such luck here, but she’d definitely eat them again.
Here’s a picture of Elm Grove Subs’ menu if you want to see just what all the sandwich shop offers. It’s also available for delivery using third-party apps. I’ve delivered here using Door Dash a few times, so I know how popular EGS is on the platform.
Give it a try. It’ll be money well spent.
