The Republican National Convention (RNC) is always an important event in the political process of American politics.

This event is where party leaders and members gather to nominate their candidates, set the party platform, and strategize for the upcoming election. After the COVID year of 2020, this year’s RNC was electric, and West Virginia’s presence was strong, which indicates the strength the Republican Party has gained in the state.

West Virginia’s delegation included several of the most influential political figures, reflecting the party’s growing importance on our beloved Mountain State. Governor Jim Justice, a strong and unwavering supporter of former President Donald Trump, prominently took the stage Tuesday evening, along with Babydog by his side, in a prime time, convention speech.

The Governor also shared her prophecy with the crowd: “Babydog has got a prediction for everybody here. And here is the prediction: Baby Dog says that we will retain the House, the majority in the House, we are going to flip the United States Senate, and overwhelmingly we are going to elect Donald J. Trump and J. D. Vance in November.”

Babydog, the Governor’s beloved English Bulldog, who was a gift from his children, has become a sort of mascot of the Justice Administration. Baby Dog’s presence at the convention added a unique and personal touch, drawing a great deal of media attention and shining a spotlight on the Governor’s connection with everyday people. Babydog’s appearances were a hit with attendees and viewers alike, symbolizing Justice’s down-to-earth appeal.

West Virginia’s grassroots and local committee leadership members were also strong and well-represented at the RNC last week. Delegates from across the state brought their local concerns to the national stage, emphasizing the issues that are impacting their areas. This presence underscores the party’s focus on maintaining strong connections with its base, particularly in states like West Virginia where the GOP has seen meaningful increases in party affiliation over the past decade.

Having this seat at the table is crucial to participate in the drafting of party platforms, advocating for policies that support West Virginia industries, reducing federal regulations, and promoting energy independence, which is critical in this state, given our economic reliance on energy production and our significant coal reserves. West Virginia’s push for a robust energy policy aligns with the bigger Republican agenda. It is imperative, whenever possible, West Virginia ensures the state’s needs are at least considered in the national policy discussions.

Additionally, West Virginia’s growing political influence in the party is likely to have a lasting effect. The state’s leaders are positioned to impact key decisions and shape the party’s direction for years to come. The robust representation of West Virginia at the 2024 Republican National Convention reflects the state’s rising prominence within the party and electricity within its people.

From Governor Justice’s high-profile speech last Tuesday evening to the presence of constitutional officers, elected officials, and local executive committee leaders, West Virginians are making their mark on the national scene. Grassroot activists and many others amplified the state’s message, ensuring our Mountain State concerns and priorities are heard.

The charming presence of Babydog added a memorable touch, symbolizing the personal connection and relatability of most West Virginia political figures. I believe this Governor loves to share his delightful fur baby with everyone because dogs generally make people happy. Sharing Babydog with the nation has now led to the creation of her very own bobblehead.

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee released Friday their plans for the creation of a bobblehead in Babydog’s likeness. Pre-orders of the Governor’s English Bulldog will be available soon. This bobblehead likely will become a collector’s item for fans of the Governor and his beloved pet, further cementing Babydog’s place in West Virginia’s political and cultural landscape.

Babydog may have a permanent place on the collector’s shelf. The Governor is likely making his way to Washington. But West Virginia is in good shape with the Republican leadership of the state.

As the party looks to the future, West Virginia’s influence surely will remain in a seat at the decision-making table, and that means the state’s residents will mean more during the years to come.
