Market rate adjustment will be implemented by end of 2023

Trinity Health System is proud to announce that a $15 per hour minimum pay rate will be implemented by the end of calendar year 2023.

One critical and important step is continuing to ensure that our financial foundation is strong so we can sustain and grow our ministry and help close the gap between today and what’s possible.”

Over the last few months, Trinity Health System has been developing an aggressive recruitment campaign and retention strategy to build the best workforce in the Ohio Valley.

The minimum pay rate adjustment is an essential investment in our workforce that will place the ministry in a position to compensate with regionally competitive rates,” Geno Taglione, Director of Human Resources, said. “The decision was determined through an evaluation of regional wages and in partnership with CommonSpirit Health.”

Two-Step Implementation Process

The minimum pay rate adjustment will be a two-step implementation process.

Step one will be to implement a $14 per hour minimum pay rate for all impacted employees effective April 16, 2023 (May 5, 2023, pay date).

Step two will be implemented on December 24, 2023, which will increase the minimum pay rate to $15 per hour (January 12, 2024, pay date) for all impacted employees.

Pay Rate Change WIll Impact Hundreds of Employees

The 2023 minimum pay rate adjustment will impact several hundred employees in nearly 100 different positions throughout the ministry.

Positions with pay ranges less than the designated minimum pay rate will be adjusted to the new minimum pay rate,” Taglione explained. “Employees working in impacted positions will receive an adjustment to their base rate.”

Compression pay adjustments will be made,” he added. “This means all employees will receive a compensation adjustment if they work in a position whose pay range was adjusted due to the minimum pay rate increase.”

Compensation adjustments were determined by the use of a regression analysis along with the development of new pay ranges and hiring grids.

Minimum Pay Rate Compensation Adjustment Implementation Steps & Timeline

Step 1: Implementation of a $14 / hour minimum rate – Effective April 16, 2023

  • April 10, 2023:Meeting with Human Resources and leaders with impacted positions to review rate changes and communication with employees
  • April 12, 2023:Leaders with impacted employees will receive a spreadsheet detailing employee name, current pay rate, and increased pay rate
  • April 16, 2023: Effective Date of minimum pay rate adjustment
  • April 1318, 2023:Leaders are to meet one on one with employees impacted by the minimum pay rate adjustment
  • May 5, 2023:Employees will see increased hourly pay rate on their May 5, 2023, paystub.

Step 2: Implementation of $15 / hour minimum pay rate – Effective December 24, 2023

  • December 18, 2023:Meeting with Human Resources and leaders with impacted positions to review rate changes and communication with employees
  • December 19, 2023: Leaders with impacted employees will receive a spreadsheet detailing employee name, current pay rate, and increased pay rate
  • December 2026, 2023:Leaders are to meet one on one with employees impacted by the minimum pay rate adjustment
  • January 12, 2024:Employees will see increased hourly pay rate on their January 12, 2024 paystub

Notably, and according to recent studies, 2022 was the worst financial year for hospitals and health care systems since the beginning of COVID-19,” Grimshaw said. “Trinity Health System is not immune from these challenges, and it is expected that the financial strain and front line labor shortages within the healthcare industry will continue well into 2023. While reducing expenses is key to our sustainability, we cannot ignore the importance of providing a regionally competitive wage to all Trinity Health System employees.
