Wheeling Honored for Historic Preservation

The City of Wheeling and the Wheeling Historic Landmarks Commission have received the Award for Preservation of Historic Downtowns as a part of the 2020 West Virginia Historic Preservation Awards.

The award was presented by Danielle Parker, executive director of the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, to Mayor Glenn Elliott on Thursday morning.

“I am honored to accept this award on the City’s behalf. Wheeling has some amazing architecture and we encourage historic preservation when possible,” Elliott said, noting the amount of Victorian construction within the City.

Specifically, Wheeling was recognized for the Façade Grant Program which has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to repair, maintain and improve the exteriors of buildings in the downtown business district up to $15,000 per building, along with exemplary design review guidelines and advocacy efforts to increase the state historic tax credit.

Preservation Alliance of West Virginia is a statewide grassroots nonprofit devoted to promoting historic preservation in the Mountain State. Each year, the organization honors historic preservation achievements and projects dedicated to preserving a unique cultural heritage.
