Wheeling PD Honors Retiring K9 Keeni

-

The Wheeling Police Department said thank you and job well done to one of its friendly faces Thursday, March 25. K9 Keeni will retire from the department after seven years of faithful service at the end of her shift Friday morning.

She was recognized for her service by Chief Shawn Schwertfeger and her fellow K9’s Jericho and Zero.

“Keeni served her department and the citizens of Wheeling extraordinarily during her tenure at the WPD,” said Chief Schwertfeger. “After many years of policing, these dogs never cease to amaze me. The skill set they possess, the loyalty they demonstrate and the service they provide are just a few of the many reasons police departments needs our canine friends.”

A Dutch Shepherd, Keeni was born July 20, 2012 in St. Albens, W.Va. Shortly after being trained in the areas of narcotic detection, tracking and apprehension through Ultimate Working Dogs and the West Virginia Police Canine Association. She was hired by the City of Wheeling in August 2014.

Over the last several years, Keeni and her handler, Cpl. Jason Martin made numerous arrests, drug finds and entertained many at local school and community functions with her jumping skills. She always enjoyed anyone who would pet her, loved beggin’ strips and is known for stealing any leftover food from the trash.

Keeni will enjoy retirement with Cpl. Martin and his family. A replacement for K9 Keeni will be announced in the summer.
