Wheeling Police Department Testing Soon for Officers

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Police Department is now accepting applications for both certified and non-certified police officers. The next in-person civil service test will be held on Saturday, March 29.

Applicants must complete a physical and written test, a polygraph exam, and a criminal background check. Additionally, candidates must be between 18 and 40 years old and must reside within a 45-mile radius of Wheeling Police Headquarters within six months of being hired. Non-certified applicants will be required to attend the West Virginia State Police Academy.

For those with current West Virginia law enforcement certification or out-of-state officers who meet West Virginia’s certification standards, the department is offering a $20,000 sign-on bonus. Additionally, any West Virginia-certified officers who are already contributing to the state retirement system may transfer their vested years of service to the City of Wheeling’s retirement plan.

New hires will also be enrolled in the department’s assigned vehicle program and will be eligible for a variety of benefits, including a retirement/pension plan, uniform allowance, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and longevity pay.

Interested candidates can submit applications online at wheelingwv.gov/policejobs. For questions about the application process or the sign-on bonus, contact the City’s Human Resources Department at 304-234-3694.
