Earlier this year I finally decided to do a DNA analysis from Ancestry.com. It confirmed a few things I knew already, but it also threw a few wrinkles into my ethnic makeup.
For one, I never knew I was part Greek. It explains my ability to tan and the curly hair for someone who believed he was primarily of German and British Isles descent.
That being said, I’d never really sampled Greek cuisine, aside from a few pieces of baklava and a county-fair sad version of a gyro.
That needed to change so I solicited the opinion of a former classmate of mine about where to go. She said there were a couple good options locally but that I’d have to travel to either Steubenville or Weirton to get it.
I’m a fat guy, so traveling for a quality meal is never an issue.
This isn’t the telling of my first trip to Yorgo’s Gyros and Potatoes in downtown Steubenville. It’s actually my third.
But much like the first and second trips, you can bet my third won’t be my last.
Each time I ordered the gyro and fries. Me being me, I stick with the meat and cheese. This time, I forgot to mention I wanted feta for the cheese, so the cheese was a mixture.
My friend also opted for meat only but made sure to get a helping of the cucumber sauce to dip her gyro in.
And lastly, we decided to split a piece of baklava. Normally, dessert isn’t an issue to finish by myself, but the amount of meat they pack into that pita wrap for the gyro really leaves a guy full by the end of the meal.
The Food
As you can see from the photos, Yorko’s packs A LOT of gyro meat in with the gryo. It’s probably best the pita in a wrap and not a pocket, as it would likely be bursting at the seams.
The meat is so tender and tasty. Personally, I prefer my gyro with feta but this time around it was equally as good.
The opinion from the opposite side of the table was just as glowing, equally so about the fries. We’re both a bit picky about the fries and how they are seasoned and prepared. But we both were more than satisfied.
Finally, the baklava, what else can you say but delicious. Not too sticky or sweet and just right.
I’m still learning more about this new aspect of my heritage, and there’s a lot more on the Yorgo’s menu I wish to try and will do so.
I encourage you to do the same. Yorgo’s Gyros and Potatoes is located at 127 N. 4th Street in Steubenville. For more information, check out its Facebook page or visit it on the web.
