WLU’s College of Sciences Welcomes Home Schooled Visitors

West Liberty University’s College of Sciences welcomed students from the Ohio Valley Christian Home Educators recently. Ten high school age students participated in a morning of instruction in the Biology Department.

“I was pleased to welcome these young students who were excited to join the university atmosphere and explore the biology lab with me,” said Dr. Leslie Quinn, associate professor of Biomedical Sciences.

The students dissected fetal pigs and examined anatomical models to gain an understanding of human anatomy.

Ohio Valley Christian Home Educators is a support group for Christian homeschoolers that serves its members by planning field trips, sporting events and social activities.

Faculty member Kinsey Skalican Guthrie, an instructor of Biology and Assistant Curator of Living Collections, then introduced the students to live animals to educate them about the anatomical adaptations across different species and how they utilize those adaptations.

A tour of the Zoo Science and Applied Conservation lab spaces also was part of the educational experience. Students enjoyed seeing the collection of animals and asking questions about the Zoo Science and Applied Conservation major that WLU offers.

The College of Sciences includes the departments of Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, MA/MS in Biology, Physician Assistant, Physical Sciences and Mathematics and Zoo Science. For more information, please visit westliberty.edu/college-of-sciences.
