Novotney: It’s about What’s Fair, Not Politics

And now it’s hitting hard right here at home.

A young lady who’s worked very hard season after season at John Marshall High School has been robbed of a state championship in the Class 3A GIRLS shot put because the Supreme Court of the United States has failed to rule that males are not permitted to compete in female sports. Arguments were heard in January, and the high court is expected to render its decision in early June.

Not soon enough, though, especially if you ask John Marshall High’s Paislee Babiczuk, a young lady who was forced to finish second on Friday to a transgender female from Bridgeport High School. The outrage is rightfully real and completely understandable, and even Governor Patrick Morrisey stated the following this afternoon on social media: “The state track and field Championship confirms the fundamental unfairness of letting boys compete in girls’ sports.”

The Governor is right, too, and we all know the science behind his argument is clearly correct and concise and NOT prejudiced against the transgender community. That’s because this outrage isn’t directed at the Bridgeport High student or at the existence of a transgender community but instead it represents the belief that biological males should never compete against biological females in school-sanctioned competitions on the high school and college levels.

It’s just not fair, folks, and hopefully the SCOTUS agrees soon.

Now, if you still disagree, please ask yourself this question: Why are there no debates in the United States about transgender males competing against biological males? You know the answer, and you also realize the only fair solution is to create two new divisions so male and female transgender student/athletes can compete against their peers and win local, state, and national titles without all of the controversy. And who knows, maybe by doing so, the number of transgender student/athletes would grow across the state and the divisions would become more and more competitive over time.

And it would be fair, too, and it’s really a shame we have to wait for the Supreme Court to tell us so.
