Charleston, W.Va. – More than 8,400 poll workers are needed to help administer West Virginia’s General Election on November 3. In recognition of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, WV Secretary of State Kris Warner announced that his Office will host a Poll Worker Recruitment Booth at the State Capitol on Tuesday, August 11.
Members of the Secretary of State staff will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to answer questions and assist registered voters interested in becoming poll workers. The information table will be located outside the Secretary of State’s Office’s Suite 157-K at the State Capitol.
To serve as a poll worker, individuals must:
- Be a registered voter in their county;
- Be able to read and write in English; and
- Attend required poll worker training.
In accordance with House Bill 4865, high school juniors and seniors in good academic standing may now, for the first time, participate directly in the election process and gain firsthand experience in public service. Eligible students are exempt from the voter registration requirement but must meet all other applicable qualifications.
Poll workers are compensated for both training and Election Day service. Responsibilities may include delivering election supplies to polling places, setting up voting locations, verifying voter registrations and identities, greeting voters, issuing ballots, and securing election materials after the polls close.
National Poll Worker Recruitment Day was established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to promote civic engagement and encourage citizens to serve as poll workers.
