Dear Randy Worls, Bill Koegler, Doug Dalby, Dave Holloway, John Hargleroad, and Don Busey:
It is difficult to determine an accurate account of the conversation that took place 47 years ago, but we are aware you all – Randy, Bill, Doug, Dave, John, and Don – represent the brain trust that brewed up the best way to celebrate Oglebay’s 50th anniversary back in 1978.
And you called it “Oglebayfest.”
What we do know for certain is the event is an annual “Thank You” to folks like us who live here in the valley and appreciate what a tremendous asset Oglebay Park is to Wheeling and every other community on both sides of the Ohio River. For many of us, the majority of our most special memories – the weddings and vow renewals, reunions and family picnics, and the holes-in-one, those slips on the slopes, the first dates, boos at the zoo, and those comfy cottage stays – were made on that Ohio County hilltop.
Sometimes, unfortunately, the clouds of controversy allow us to forget what’s most important, and that is, in our collective opinion, the fact we once again have this weekend to gather and celebrate our community at a place adored and envied by all who visit.
That is why it is now our turn to offer thanks to you, but not only for the Phil Maxwell Artisan and Gourmet markets, the Hilltop Shop, the live and local music, the fireworks, the Ohio County Country Fair, and, of course, the Rathskeller, but also for our year-round sanctuary that is Oglebay.
So, thank you.
Sincerely,
The Neighbors
