An OPEN LETTER to … Wheeling’s PODA Supporters …

-

Hello Progress!

It may not be a big deal to a lot of people, but Friday’s PODA Walk should have been a signal to local residents that the “the way we’ve always done it” mindset is officially dead in the city of Wheeling.

And, to us anyway, it feels good.

The new ordinance for PODA – Public Outdoor Designated Area – allows for folks to enjoy a to-go beverage (in the official cup) while walking in the downtown and Centre Market areas. Right now, the Bridge Tavern and River City are the two participating establishments, and others – according to Council member Ty Thorngate – will be coming on board in the near future, and then again later this summer.

What’s the big deal? Well, that depends on what follows. The PODA rule nullifies open containers laws and promotes downtown commerce through sidewalk gatherings in nice weather conditions so maybe – just maybe – folks in the future may participate in a “Scooby Snack” venture (as suggested by Chef Rocco Basil in this LEDE article). Have an appetizer and a drink, order a “walkie” beverage, and then slurp away to the next eatery for another round of both.

Will it catch on? Who knows? No matter what, though, we’re pleased with the new out-of-the-box mentality that’s allowing residents and businesses to finally try “it” a different way.

So, what’s next?

Sincerely,

Finished with the Insanity
