WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Aug. 19, 2020 — West Liberty University students are in for a treat this fall as some will be housed in the nearby resort setting of Oglebay.
“Due to an increased number of enrolled students and the overwhelming request for single rooms this fall due to COVID-19, we were faced with the dilemma of running out of campus housing. As we considered what to do, we turned to our neighbor on the Hilltop to discuss options,” explained Dr. Stephen Greiner, WLU president.
As a result of this, 35 students moved into Oglebay on Sunday, Aug. 16.
“Oglebay is delighted to be in a position to assist our neighbor, West Liberty University, with temporary housing. We look forward to the students’ arrival and the opportunity to share our hospitality with them,” said David Lindelow, president and CEO Wheeling Park Commission.
Oglebay, a long-standing partner with West Liberty University, works with the university in several other ways including its Zoo Science program and the Gary E. West College of Business internship program.
Utilizing Oglebay’s Chalet Rooms and the Kline Wing, students are now residing just 7.3 miles away from the main campus in the picturesque setting of a major resort. These students won’t even have to pay for gas, since the WLU Foundation has agreed to cover fuel costs for students commuting from the park.
“The lodging arrangements at Oglebay mean a lot to the university at this time and are helping us as we await the opening of more campus housing in the new apartment complex that should be completed sometime this fall,” said Greiner.
WLU’s digital streaming platform, Topper Station (topperstation.com), will promote Oglebay Park on Channel-14 as part of the discounted room rate deal.
Of course, these students might get used to Oglebay’s amenities which include the outdoor pool through Labor Day weekend, hiking trails to enjoy throughout the park and a variety of attractions to visit. Weekly maid service, fresh towels and bed linens are also standard with the rooms.
Students using this arrangement will eventually move into the new housing soon to be completed and located just across Rt. 88 near WLU’s main entrance.
Meanwhile, some lucky students can enjoy fall colors in an enviable way as they experience one of our region’s premier resort settings.
An additional benefit of this arrangement is that Oglebay is offering a Parent’s Rate. Parents of any student housing at Oglebay are welcome to stay overnight at Oglebay for a special rate. Oglebay reservations also will try to place parents in a room in the same wing of the lodge where their student will be staying.
West Liberty University is West Virginia’s oldest public university and offers more than 70 undergraduate majors, plus a growing number of graduate programs, both online and on campus.
