WHEELING, W.Va. — The Ohio County community is mourning the death of Scott Smith, a beloved and respected public servant who served as Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney for more than two decades. Smith, 67, of Wheeling, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

Born in Utica, New York, in 1958, Scott moved to Wheeling with his family in 1961. A graduate of Linsly Military Academy, he went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh and later earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1983. At WVU, Scott met his wife of 40 years, Holli Smith. Together, they built a life grounded in love, adventure, and public service.

Scott began his legal career in public service as an assistant prosecutor in 1993 and was first elected as Ohio County Prosecutor in 2000. He served with distinction across six consecutive terms, retiring in 2024. Known for his sharp legal mind, fair judgment, and unwavering commitment to justice, Smith earned the admiration of both colleagues and the wider community. His legacy includes tireless advocacy, principled leadership, and a reputation for balancing strength with compassion in the pursuit of justice.

Scott’s many career accolades included being a 2024 Recipient of The United States Attorney’s Distinguished Law Enforcement Lifetime Achievement Award. Beyond the courtroom, Scott was a passionate volunteer and enthusiastic presence at community events.

He is survived by his wife Holli Smith and their four children and granddaughter. Scott Smith will be remembered not only for his achievements, but for the qualities that defined him: his brilliant intellect, magnetic personality, integrity, and unwavering love for his family. His presence, mentorship, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until the 7:00 PM service on Monday June 9, 2025 at Altmeyer Wheeling Chapel 1400 Eoff Street Wheeling, WV 26003.
