Ohio County Trailer Fire Proves Fatal

Shortly before 5 pm on 01-29-2026, a 911 call came out concerning a trailer fire with possible entrapment.

Cpl. G.J. Costello called Sheriff Croft while en route. In the meantime, several OCSO Personnel, including Chief Deputy Kent Lewis and Sheriff Croft began responding.

The area was Wildlife Road which is on the southeast corner of our small county, neighboring Washington Co PA. and Marshall Co WV. Our county is small but this is a remote location. Upon arrival of the initial first responders, Cpl. Costello and Valley Grove Fire Dept Chief Andy Pierce, it was determined that the structure was fully involved.

Family members on scene reported that they believed a family member had been trapped inside. Due to intense, heat, fire and smoke, there was no way to attempt a rescue until the fire was knocked down.

Responding fire agencies included Dallas WV VFD, Valley Grove WV VFD, Triadelphia WV VFD, West Alexander PA VFD, OCSO and Ohio Co Emergency Management Agency and Ohio County EMS. After a lengthy battle to control the flames to ensure a safe rescue attempt, a deceased body was found inside the structure. It is believed authorities know who it is.

At this time, OCSO has turned the investigation over to the WV State Fire Marshall’s Office and the WV Medical Examiner‘s Office. There will be no further releases from my office unless in the very unlikely event, something catches the eye of the Fire Marshall or Medical Examiner.

Please remember that this is a very tight-knit community in and of itself, let alone how tight-knit Ohio Co is. Please show compassion to all involved.

Thank you, and God Bless.
