Santorine: ‘We All Want Perfect’

-

I’ve read that President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” narrowly passed through Congress. It now goes to the Senate for consideration, and it will be some Republican senators excuse to stump about something in the bill that just isn’t good enough.

The Democrats will complain about every word in the bill. We know how they are.

There were two Republican congressmen who didn’t vote for this important legislation – Thomas Massie from Kentucky and Andy Harris from Maryland (he voted “present”). Both complained that it didn’t go far enough.

That may have been a great way for them to make their point, but they certainly brought it right down to the wire. This would be a different column if the bill had failed.

I don’t think either of those congressmen would have changed their vote to push this bill through to passage. I hope they fully understood the tax increases they would bring home to their constituents if the bill didn’t pass.

Voting “present” is completely gutless as well. I’m sure Harris’ constituents voted for someone with more testicular fortitude. I’ll be sending money to their primary challengers the next time they are up for election.

But my concern is how educated and articulate people don’t understand a couple of rules that are common in business and run through all organizations. Those “rules” are “Perfect is the Enemy of Good,” and you’ll never get 100 percent. In reality, they are the same thing.

I want perfect government. I want a highly effective bureaucracy that has the compassion to treat the citizens who pay their wages with dignity and respect. Just because I want it does not mean I’m going to get it. Right now, we are at about 25 percent. We have bloated government, staffed by officious, nasty bureaucrats who love nothing more than to make citizens bow to their every edict.

I also know this is not something that can be fixed quickly. It’s going to take time. So, we settle for a bill that is 70 percent of what we want because there are those among us who will keep us from getting to that magic 100 percent number. If it’s even achievable.

But 70 percent is not bad.

We all want perfect. We will likely get better than the 0 percent solution of “just throw money at it” we had in the last administration. When hiring, if I get an employee who does 75 percent of what I expect – 75 percent of as fast as I can do it – I consider it a win. I have people in my employ who are “fifty percent-ers”. Not good enough for a promotion, not bad enough to de-hire.

But if the trend is good with any of them, from the worst to my top performers, I’m happy. I’m getting things done.

The trend with the “Big Beautiful Bill” is good. The Trump administration is getting things done.

Not perfect, but I’ll take it.
