Sumo Serves Up Incredible Eats

When occasion calls for me to be in Steubenville, I get low-key excited because I know I’m about to eat well.

It’s about a 25-30 minute drive for me, so it’s not often I make it up north, but when I did, there are so many tasty options to eat, many of which are locally owned. I try to avoid chain restaurants when I can. There’s nothing wrong with them, but I save that for fast food when I’m in a hurry, not when I want to sit down and enjoy a meal.

But last week, upon a recommendation, I made the trek specifically to Steubenville as part of date night. Where did we end up you ask? That would be Sumo Hibachi & Sushi at 4170 Sunset Blvd.

If you’ve read any of my reviews, you’ll know that while I’m not the world’s pickiest eater, my forays into vegetable-centric cuisine, or seafood for the matter, are few and far between.

I’ve eaten once each at the other major hibachi-styler restaurants in the Ohio Valley, one at the highlands and one at the Ohio Valley Mall. Both were excellent.

So, in that, I was looking forward to some hibachi-style chicken and rice. No sushi for this guy. I may be a person that greatly frowns upon a well-done steak—even medium is a stretch. But the meat has to of at least been kissed by flame. No raw meat, seafood, or otherwise, for this guy.

We arrived for a mid-week dinner a bit before the dinner rush began. There were a number of patrons inside, but I think we beat the crowd there as customers in greater numbers began filtering in as we ate.

We quickly were given our table and our drink order taken. Soon after she took our meal orders which, strangely enough, were identical—chicken hibachi, with double-fried rice and a salad.

I know a good meal order when I hear one, and that sounded perfect to me.

The Food

Our salads were brought out first, and let me say, this is my idea of the perfect salad. Remember my aforementioned comment about vegetable-centric food? What could be more veggie-based than a salad? Well, this salad was basically lettuce and a delectable dressing which, while I’m not entirely sure what it was, was ginger-based and tasted incredible. I’ll take it.

Then the chicken came out. And I’ll say this; we certainly got our money’s worth.

We reach received a giant plate consisting of two ample helpings of fried rice on one side, and a helping of hibachi-style chicken on the other, enough to fill the entirety of the one half of the plate.

Large portion sizes indeed. I’m a big fella, and I had trouble finishing my rice and chicken. It was that tasty though, so I persevered. She needed a to-go box, but in all honesty, I think most people would have.

I view eating as bringing in the groceries … one trip.

There were a few other things on the menu I want to try the next time we return, and there will most certainly be a next time. Maybe next time I’ll remember to take some photos too. The conversation was only matched by how incredible the food tasted, and in my haste to shovel it in my mouth, I forgot to snap my customary photos.
