Tokyo Hibachi: Japanese Cuisine on the Go

Your intrepid food reviewer hit the road recently to sample yet another newish establishment in the valley.

Seriously folks, I do this for you. It has absolutely nothing to do with being fat and enjoying eating.

But I digress—and digest.

This time we swung through Martins Ferry as my other career as an occasional sports journalist took me to last week’s Cambridge at Martins Ferry football game.

There are two places in town I’ve been meaning to try. But, given I was on the job, I didn’t want to make it to Purple Riders stadium reeking of beer, so I saved that trip for another night.

No, we decided to go to Tokyo Hibachi Restaurant at 1220 S. Zane Highway in the south end of town. Remember the old Dairy Queen in Ferry? Well that’s where you’ll find Tokyo Hibachi today.

I remembered the old Dairy Queen, which is why I kicked myself in incorrectly thinking there’s be somewhere inside to sit and eat. There wasn’t. I should have remembered that.

Small aside, as I’ll get to the food later, but that’s really my only gripe with Tokyo Hibachi, and it’s not even really a gripe. But because of the location, you can’t eat inside. And believe me, the food is quality. You’d want to sit down and experience it.

So here’s hoping that business continues to grow (I always heard good things prior to trying it) and the owners choose to find another location, in Martins Ferry, big enough to have sit down dining.

Until then, the drive-thru or pick-up will have to do as we’ll definitely be going back.

The menu consists of what you’d expect at a Hibachi restaurant, a mixture of Japanese and Chinese cuisine, plus a large variety of seafood options.

The Food

Seeing as we are not seafood people for the most part, we both opted for the Chicken Hibachi dinner, which comes with either fried rice or noodles, vegetables, a salad, and clear soup.

I opted for the noodles, she the rice. She also ordered a couple egg rolls to go with her meal.

The salad again was basically lettuce and the dressing which, as stated previously, works perfectly for me.

Before I get to the food, let me discuss the portions. My dinner contained housed a lot of hibachi-style chicken. We were also given ample soy and teriyaki sauce, and that was before asking for a little bit extra.

Now, back to the food. In short, it was incredibly tasty. I think being packed into the dinner container; it wasn’t able to be doused in sauce like you might find when eating at the restaurant. No bother, I took care of that once I got to the car.

The chicken tasted incredible and went well with my noodles. The same sentiment echoed out of the other seat in the car about the rice. She enjoyed the egg roll and, while I gave it a try, they’ve never been my thing. But, I didn’t hate it. Given how picky I am, that’s a fairly solid ringing endorsement. If you like egg rolls, definitely try it.

The service was friendly and incredibly helpful. We ordered inside and waited for our food while others called ahead or pulled through the drive-thru. This is a place we’ll definitely return to.

We just wish there was somewhere to sit.
