Week 7: Northern Panhandle Preview

GAMES TO WATCH

Class A

Cameron (3-3) at No. 8 Clay-Battelle (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last Week: Cameron picked up a much needed win over the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights, 34-26. The Cee-Bees finally opened their season with a win over Valley Wetzel, 48-13.

Why it’s important: Both programs have the possibility of making the post-season in Class A. Clay-Battelle cannot afford a loss right now as they only have three more opponents on the schedule. Cameron is currently placed outside the playoff bracket as a No. 24 seed. A win over the Cee-Bees would be quite helpful for their post-season dreams.

Whom to watch for Cameron: Freshman quarterback Colson Wichterman was the leader on the gridiron yet again this week, leading the Dragons to another win.

Whom to watch for Clay-Battelle: Carson Shriver led the Cee-Bees to their first win of the season; he had 20 carries for 216 yards, four rushing touchdowns, and one passing touchdown as well.

Class A

No. 6 St Marys (5-1) at Magnolia (1-5)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last Week: The Blue Eagles held with Class AA Berkeley Springs quite well in the first half. However, Berkeley was unstoppable in the second half winning by the final, 53-22. The Blue Devils came back after their Week 5 loss to Williamstown; St Marys defeated Wirt County last week 26-7.

Why it’s important: Magnolia needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive while St Marys is looking to climb in the playoff rankings.

Whom to watch for St Marys: The dynamic duo of senior QB Brennan Boron and senior RB Tre Moss, both can be an extreme threat on both sides of the ball when leading the offense.

Whom to watch for Magnolia: Jason Beisel led the Blue Eagles offense last week accounting for over 200 yards and all of the Blue Eagle scores.

Magnolia is one of many teams in Class A fighting for a possible playoff opportunity.

CLASS AA

No. 2 Oak Glen (4-1) at Weir (1-5)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last Week: Oak Glen defeated Class AAA Brooke in a shootout, 61-21. Meanwhile, Weir is coming off a loss to the three-time defending champions from Class A, Wheeling Central, 35-12.

Why it’s important: With the Red Riders not officially eliminated from postseason play, a win from one of the top teams from Class AA would absolutely help them. Oak Glen is trying to make up for their only loss of the season; the Golden Bears are still seeking the No. 1 seed in Class AA.

Whom to watch for Oak Glen: Nick Cheney was responsible for 216 yards and three touchdowns against the Brooke Bruins.

Whom to watch for Weir: Senior QB Anthony DiMatteis was the leader in last week’s game against Wheeling Central; he managed to account for 9 of 25 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.

CLASS AAA

No. 8 Wheeling Park (5-1) at University (1-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last Week: Wheeling Park found its way past the Morgantown Mohigans winning by the final, 41-20. University was knocked off by Jefferson last week in a thriller, 14-13.

Why it’s important: Both of these schools are looking to qualify for the competitive Class AAA postseason. With only a handful of weeks remaining in the regular season both of these teams need a win this Friday.

Whom to watch for Wheeling Park: Stevie Mitchell led the way for the Patriots’ victory over the Morgantown Mohigans (1-1). Mitchell plowed his way to 209 yards on 31 carries.

Whom to watch for University: Sophomore QB Chase Edwards was responsible for all of the scores in last week’s game against Jefferson.

CLASS AAA

No. 14 John Marshall (4-2) at Brooke (1-5)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Last Week: The Monarchs were defeated by Princeton, 68-33. Meanwhile, Brooke is trying to get things back on track after a devastating loss to Class AA power No. 2 Oak Glen, 61-21.

Why it’s important: With John Marshall now deep into the Class AAA playoff bracket Brooke will now look to make an upset Friday night to possibly knock the Monarchs away from the bracket.

Whom to watch for John Marshall: Dalton Flowers led the way on offense with 150 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown.

Whom to watch for Brooke: Josh Shorts was 6 of 15 on passing for a total of 113 yards last week against Oak Glen.
