West Liberty University has received approval from its accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, to offer a joint aviation program with Marshall University. The approval is the final step in the process to offer the program, beginning with the Fall 2024 semester.
“We are excited to begin enrolling students in the West Liberty University joint aviation program with Marshall University, which represents a monumental step forward for aviation in West Virginia,” said Dr. Cathy Monteroso, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Together, we are building a gateway for countless aspiring pilots to soar beyond the ordinary and achieve their dreams. The benefit of the joint program is that it leverages expertise in faculty and facilities, providing opportunities for students in a growing field.”
Planning for the program has been in the works since last summer when the two universities announced they would begin a partnership to offer the program. Given the national shortage in pilots, the program will meet a critical workforce need.
In addition to partnering with Marshall, West Liberty is working closely with the Ohio County Commission and the Regional Economic Development (RED) Partnership to offer the program at the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport.

West Liberty University and Marshall University will host an Aviation Day on Saturday, June 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport. Students and the public can learn more and see the state-of-the-art aircraft that will be used for the program. Refreshments will be provided.
