West Liberty University student Austin Hall won a state-wide logo competition recently that awarded him a monetary prize and a chance to build his professional resume.

Hall was one of 35 students who submitted designs to the Bridging Resources West Virginia (BRWV) logo competition. BRWV is a new statewide initiative that provides older adults, people with disabilities, veterans, caregivers, and families access to long-term services and supports by offering a network of state and community-based resources.

“I am thrilled to receive this award and am grateful to Professor Davis for her encouragement,” Hall said. Hall is a Visual Communication major from Cambridge, Ohio.

The check was presented by West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services Deputy Commissioner Jacqueline Proctor at a brief ceremony held on the WLU campus this past Friday. Also attending was Metro Area Agency on Aging Executive Director Brenda Landers.

“We are very proud of Austin and all of our graphic design students who participated in this contest. I thank Christina for reaching out to me and I’m so excited for Austin!” said Associate Professor Sarah Davis, who teaches graphic design in WLU’s Department of Media and Visual Arts.

Christina Jumper from the WVSU Metro Area Agency on Aging is the project coordinator for the logo competition.

“This effort by Austin resulted in our initial logo and assists us with branding BRWV. Before this we only had our Facebook page, so this is a significant step forward to get the good news out of our new organization,” Jumper said. “We are grateful to Professor Davis for promoting this contest to her students.”

Ten West Virginia colleges, universities or technical schools were invited to participate in the logo design contest this past fall, with the winner receiving a $500 award along with their design being used on all BRWV marketing materials in the future.

Davis actually had two students who placed in the semi-finals of the logo competition, Hall and Cole Goode of Shadyside, Ohio.

Hall is a sophomore. He also works at a print shop, Speedy Print, in Cambridge, in addition to attending WLU.

“We made only a few adjustments to the new logo and its coloring to simplify it for printing purposes and cost effectiveness. We are so grateful to all the schools and students who participated in the design contest,” Jumper said.
