WHEELING, W.Va. – The Ohio County Development Authority announced today that WVU Medicine will expand access to high-quality, specialized healthcare in the Ohio Valley through the lease of a new outpatient facility at The Highlands in Wheeling. The location will bring together several high-demand services under one roof, including ophthalmology, orthopedic sports medicine, rapid care, primary care, urology, laboratory services, and diagnostic X-ray, making it easier and more convenient for patients to access the care they need close to home.
“WVU Medicine’s decision to expand at The Highlands is another example of the momentum we’re seeing across Ohio County,” said Randy Wharton, President of the Ohio County Development Authority. “Quality healthcare is essential to building strong communities and supporting economic growth. This investment not only improves access to important medical services for residents throughout the valley, but also reinforces The Highlands as a destination for the services families depend on every day.”
The new facility reflects WVU Medicine’s continued commitment to expanding convenient access to comprehensive healthcare throughout the region while meeting the growing needs of patients and communities across the Ohio Valley. By bringing a wide range of outpatient services together in a single location, patients will benefit from greater convenience, coordinated care, and easier access to the specialists and diagnostic services they rely on.

Located at one of the region’s fastest-growing commercial and retail destinations, the new outpatient center will increase access for patients throughout Ohio, Marshall, Brooke, Hancock, Belmont, and surrounding counties.
The facility will complement WVU Medicine’s existing network of hospitals, physician offices, and outpatient locations while helping ensure patients have access to high-quality care closer to where they live and work. This expansion also represents a continued investment in the economic vitality of the Ohio Valley, strengthening healthcare infrastructure and enhancing the services available within the region. Wheeling Hospital, founded in 1850, has served patients longer than any other hospital in West Virginia. Today, it is a 255-bed acute care facility with a medical staff of over 225 primary care and specialty physicians. It provides a wide array of primary and tertiary care services.
